Have you noticed that when you meet someone for the first time, your immediate reaction is to make an instant like or dislike decision? This is how it felt for me when I met HAL. Albeit that he was English, extremely tall, clumsy and had a serious allergic problem, he just seemed like a nice young man. From the moment he entered my mind, I couldn’t help but like him.

Now it’s worth noting that although a likeable young fellow, he does have a nose for trouble. That is, he can’t seem to keep his nose out of it. From the moment he left the grey shores of England for the sun soaked beaches of Australia, and in particular, Queensland beaches, HAL found it all to easy make friends, drink XXXX beer, cook barbecues, even go on a date, as well as get himself into all sorts of trouble and strife. His upbringing however, gave him the dignity and grace not to complain to loudly when unfortunate happenings or disasters struck. Stiff upper lip, grin and bear it and get on with life being his approach.
So, enough said. Keep an eye out for my new friend HAL, and if you do happen to run into him one day, maybe you could invite him to your place for fun evening around the barbecue.

Oh, and by the way. Some wise words from HAL.

‘While some waste their time looking for the meaning of life, there are others who understand there is none and just get on enjoying the space they are renting.’

A young fool becomes king and quickly discovers he has some very nasty enemies. Particularly the ones who are shooting at him.

In a remarkable turn of events, a young man with a lot definitely not going for him, somehow manages to come to terms with a startling reality. He has to grow up. Being handicapped by not only having rather nasty acne and an odd eye impediment, he also has to suffer the fact that his name is February. Or at best, Feb to his very limited number of friends.

While not at all wishing to rush into this startling new reality, circumstances and a few elbow nudges from his very protective elder sister ensure that his ‘not at all wishing’ turns out to be a complete waste of time. Thrust totally and altogether unwillingly into a position of authority by early afternoon, February finds himself with a new appendage tacked on to the end his name.

The Fifth. The new and very authoritative part of his name.

Of course, as is the case in all such rapid and thrusting types of promotion to positions of power, there will be those who are not happy about it. In February’s case however, he finds that in fact these those amount to just about everyone apart from his three sisters.

Undaunted by this reality, Feb accepts his new responsibility and by early evening sets about getting himself into a real tangle. His only true achievement being that he discovers that quite a few of these those who weren’t so happy, are in fact really very upset about the whole Fifth appendage deal. By bedtime, he thinks he is in trouble.

Before lunchtime the next day, he is sure.

The Gripsholm Mystery

Derek asked me for another guest bloggery attempt in order to celebrate the fact that my latest book is finally out on Amazon (US only so far). Or perhaps it was because he is out of ideas for blog posts himself. Or too busy writing about people with weird names. Or whatever. As I wasn't sure what to write about, he suggested I might explain how I got the idea for my latest book. Which might turn out to be a trifle embarrassing.

Because what I did was to put a vampire on a hospital ship in the middle of the First World War. I might be tempted to explain it away by the fact that it's the ideal place to be if you are a vampire: lots of blood and no way for your prey to get away. But the fact is, I have a faintly glorious past, no, rather a faint past, as a writer of nautical fiction, so I couldn't do without boats whatever I'd write. And I have been a bit intrigued by the paranormal romance genre lately. So I decided to combine the two things. And of course there's always the hope that vampires would sell a bit better than gunboat captains of 1808 getting involved with female spies.

But of course I could not make it too easy for myself. So my heroine, Antonia Correlli, isn't just a vampire. She also is a succubus. That means she is endowed with some special magic, for example the ability to sustain sunlight and heal humans. But in order to keep this ability she needs to feed on human emotions. On their passion, their sexual arousal as well as on blood.

Here, the confined space of the hospital ship becomes a double edged sword. Because as well as her human prey being unable to escape her, there is only a limited number of them and sooner or later Antonia won't be able to protect her secret. When certain mysterious things happen aboard the vessel, her curiosity makes her less cautious. And there is the captain, who seems to have some magic of his own.

What Is This Book About?

Great question. The answer is so splendidly simple. This book is about anything, everything and nothing. It is an ideal companion on a bus or train where regular interruptions are guaranteed as every part of this book is very, very short. Ideal also for parents of young children who get interrupted a lot by screaming, crying and toilet training. Great too for those with a limited attention span.

Another terrific attribute of this book is that it is either cheap or free. This A or B choice is yours depending on where you source the book from. If you choose option A it will be a comfort to know that you have made a contribution to my food fund. At the same time, if you choose option B it's ok too.

While on this subject I should point out that this book is only available in electronic formats. The reasoning is that no trees are destroyed in the process. No chlorine, bleach, potassium or nuclear material is dumped into the environment as a result of paper manufacturing and therefore I have a much clearer conscience. As well as that, this e-book contains the mindless meanderings of an ageing Australian male lost in the alpine paradise of Switzerland which in itself is probably enough pollution.

If you have already scanned the table of contents you will have noticed that there is certainly no rhyme, logic or theme in this book. The reason for this is that each short utterance captures my thoughts on a singular day during the last twelve months.

So get ready for a wild ride eh, read.

Superfan is a collection of stories and anecdotes from one of English soccer’s great characters.

Morris Keston was once just a regular Spurs fan, albeit one running a highly successful business, but then he started befriending the players (at first by following them out of the ground and sitting next to them on the bus!). By the time the 1966 World Cup came around Bobby Moore and Jimmy Greaves were popping round for tea between England training sessions and when Spurs reached numerous cup finals in the ‘70s and ‘80s the players from both teams would flock to his exciting after-match party instead of the club’s official dos.

Travelling the world to follow Spurs and England team in the days when for most fans it simply wasn’t an option, Morris invariably ended up on the team bus or in the bar with the players. In 1991 he even came within a few hours of becoming chairman of Spurs.

Beyond football he became friends with the likes of Eric Morecambe and Jimmy Tarbuck, Muhammad Ali and Frank Sinatra. He regularly travelled from LA to Vegas in Sinatra's private jet and still goes into a cold sweat when recalling the time Stirling Moss reversed his car down a narrow street at 90mph.

He had a whole chapter devoted to him in Hunter Davies’s classic sports tome The Glory Game, but now the amazing adventures of Morris Keston at last have a book of their own.

They’ll have to dodge fleets of wheel chairs and scooters long enough to expose him.

Vinnie’s sharp-elbowed wife is indispensable as she leads the way past line-cutters, other people’s obnoxious children and the maniac driving the scooter with the on-board colostomy bag. When they befriend a crotchety bartender back at the hotel Dave and Vinnie unexpectedly tap an inside source that just might help them get their man.

If you are looking for answers to the above questions, this is NOT the place to look. This book covers many topics. But none in depth. It doesn’t ask too many questions. So logically from this perspective, it doesn’t answer many questions either. It does however have some recipes.

In between the recipes there are passages of meandering text that are placed in a clever word order so as to create utter confusion for the reader, and include (above all else) phrases in brackets that further test the reader’s patience. There are also (1) and no pictures.

This book was written in 1998. Today it is 2009. So what has changed. Not much, except I use and Apple uni-boby laptop now to put words into a clever order.

Vincent interferes, but it is too late. She has been bitten and the wound will not heal. The next night Vincent tells her that she will become a vampire. And she must meet her attacker.

Steopa, the giant, turns out to be not the monster he was when he attacked her. She can see his memories and he can see hers. Beka knows she is not in danger around him. Steopa takes her under his wing and shows her how to survive.

A few nights into her new life, Steopa receives the news that an old rival of his has come to the town. Then other vampires show up at the nightclub. Vincent shows Beka and Steopa what is under the nightclub. An old secret that Vincent doesn't understand.

It becomes apparent that the old rival of Steopa's and the secret under the nightclub are related. When her brother is attacked. Beka goes with Steopa to end it. Can she survive? Will she?

Milo Moon: A Story That Never Happened.

If you take a little Arthur Dent from The Hitchhikers Guide, some 1984 Winston Smith and Big Brother mixed with a sprinkling of Peter Pan, the Mad Hatter and some 1960's LSD you are half way to discovering what the book Milo Moon is all about.

Of course a smattering of Frankenstein's monster and the Seven Faces of Eve gently stirred into a mousse of Disney fantasy with completely out of context sexual references and you have a chunk of the second half.

The third half becomes more complicated as a smattering of political intrigue and characters who wish to remain nameless wander in and out at their leisure giving one a sense of hope which of course is quickly and brutally dashed.

The fourth half smells of The Lord of the Flies, but luckily there's no mention of any pig heads on sticks. Thankfully. Then of course there's the end which occurs stereotypically on the last page. If you have read this far, venture on and enjoy Milo Moon.

Who Is Milo Moon?

Milo is a young man trapped over time in other peoples' bodies. Although suffering a life of what others would regard as misery, Milo keeps a positive outlook and finds pleasure in the colour brown, instant coffee and his cat. He wishes he could iron, or at least knew someone who could do it for him and works his days away putting nuts onto bolts and counting to ten. His favourite possession is a butcher's calendar. A miserable, yet settled life, until one morning when the sound of his doorbell ringing at a frightfully early hour sets his life in a wonderfully new direction. Up!

Harriet, a good natured girl full of optimism and ‘joi de vivre’ grew up on the beautiful but isolated island of Riduna in the late nineteenth century, where the strict and traditional values of the island’s elders were forever challenged by the strangers who were now living among them. These included the Militia and the settlers on the island who had originally come to build the fortresses and the breakwater defences and also to provide services for the community such as doctors and teachers.

As Harriet’s story unfolded, it wove through the lives of her close community. Her vulnerable innocence caused conflict, as her feelings towards her childhood best friend and defender Edward changed from affection to a deeper love. Edward set sail to fulfil his dream to travel the world leaving, Harriet waiting at home on the island she loved dearly, struggling with her fragile emotions.

The journey of Harriet’s life soon takes her further from her girlhood dreams and fantasies as tragedy, poor communications and fate all play a part in their destiny.
